Resources For Families:
Folk arts are all around us! Folklife and folk arts connect to community and to ways of knowing that strengthen our personal identity, family identity, and local regional identity. Folk arts education is an educational approach that any educator can implement at any moment in time simply by the way we engage students in curiosity, and frame questions and inquiry to our students.
Our homes and local communities are wonderful places to explore and learn about ourselves and others. Our hope is that students bring what they are learning in their folk arts education programs home to continue their learning outside of school. Parents, grandparents, guardians, and local community members are vital sources of folklife knowledge. Sharing knowledge about your own or your family’s language, foodways, and traditions, with students ensures the passing on of culture and creates bonds within groups. Below are some materials and activities we hope serve as useful resources to continue folk arts conversations at home.
